The manufacturing assembly line was first introduced by Henry Ford in the early 1900's,an assembly line is a production arrangement of workers and equipment in which the product that is being assembled passes consecutively from operation to operation, with each station adding to the work of previous stations, until the product is completed.

Assembly line balancing is a  classic,  well-researched  Operations Research optimization problem of significant  industrial importance.the assembly line has balancing has some concept which we should know it.

1.cycle time

The cycle time of an assembly line is predetermined by a desired production rate.This production rate is set so that the desired amount of end product is produced within a certain time period.

2.Precedence diagram

Precedence requirements are physical restrictions on the order in which operations are performed on the assembly line. network showing order of tasks and restrictions on their performance can be showed.Assign tasks to work stations observing balancing restrictions so as to minimize balance delay while keeping station work content for every station cycle time.

3.The line balancing process

the process of assembly line can be know.first,Draw and label a precedence diagram. second,Calculate the desired cycle time required for the line.third,Calculate the theoretical minimum number of workstations.four,Group elements into workstations, recognizing cycle time and precedence constraints.

4.Measure of efficiency

The balancing and the sequencing problem are heavily interdependent. While the line balance decides on the assignment of tasks to stations and thus determines the work content per station and model, the production sequence of a given model mix is arranged on this basis with regard to minimum overloads. The amount of overload by itself is a measure of efficiency for the achieved line balance.
